En framgång för "the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community!" Och indirekt för oss alla!

En glad nyhet på söndag morgon: Houston har just fått en öppet homosexuell borgmästare, http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/13/us/politics/13houston.html!

Världen är lite snurrig, kan man tycka (eller så visar detta bara att jag inte hänger med): Houston (som f ö är USAs fjärde största stad!), i Bushs hemstat Texas, har haft en kampanj där en färgad man, Gene Locke, tävlade som republikansk kandidat mot en lesbisk kvinna, Annise Parker, och den sistnämnda vann klart, 53% mot 47%!

New York Times skriver: "Throughout the campaign, Ms. Parker tried to avoid making an issue of her sexual orientation and emphasized her experience in overseeing the city’s finances. But she began her career as an advocate for gay rights in the 1980s, and it was lost on no one in Houston, a city of 2.2 million people, that her election marked a milestone for gay men and lesbians around the country."

Los Angeles Times skriver att hon "never made (either) a secret or an issue of her sexual orientation."

BBC skriver: "This election has changed the world for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community. Just as it is about transforming the lives of all Houstonians for the better, and that's what my administration will be about," Ms Parker declared after Saturday's run-off.

Och till råga på allt så är det i de media jag läst en befriande frånvaro av religiöst präglade kommentarer, inget om att "jag hoppas att med Guds stöd ena vår stad" eller något annat ditåt.
